The current Torah portions being studied in the Jewish world are about the construction of the tabernacle. This week’s begins with a call for all those with a willing heart to give, Exodus 35:5. Everyone had a chance to participate in this unique opportunity, to prepare a place for the presence of God. Having a ‘willing heart’ was the key, and is a phrase found several times in the chapter. The Hebrew word translated ‘willing’ is nadiv, a word that means both ‘willingly generous’ and denoting ‘a noble character’. Perhaps not all were so stirred and they missed this privilege, because in verse 22 we read that, “they came both men and women, as many as had a willing heart.” However, we know that people did indeed give so willingly they had to be stopped by Moses in Exodus 36:7, “And so the people were restrained from bringing more, because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work.”
In the New Testament 2 Corinthians, 9:7 confirms that giving involves a willing heart, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
PASSOVER APPEAL
Each year, usually in April, the journey from slavery to freedom is commemorated during Passover. In the preceding days ICEJ receives many urgent requests from social workers to help disadvantaged Jewish families celebrate this most important festival. ICEJ staff deliver food baskets with a food voucher, Passover treats, a small gift, and a beautiful card expressing warm holiday wishes from Christians around the world.
Your generous giving will give ICEJ Aid the means to help Jewish families have a blessed Passover celebration, turning tears into joy! “It shows that you care for me, and it brings me joy for the holidays. Thank you for your kindness to me and my girls,” said a single mum last year.
