The Compassion of Jesus Never Fails
“As he [Jesus] approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it.” Luke 19:41-44
On Monday night a sad commemoration begins as Jews the world over fast reflect on the destruction of the First and Second Temples on the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av. Many other calamities are said to have occurred on, or about this day. For example, the expulsions from England in 1290 and from Spain in 1492 occurred on this date. According to tradition, It was also the 9th Av on which the twelve spies brought back a bad report about the Land of Canaan which discouraged the nation from entering their destiny and instead, doubted God’s promises.
We know that right now the nation of Israel is again in a period of danger and anxiety. But in the Book of Lamentations whose mournful prayers will be read on the 9th Av, the prophet reminds himself, “This I recall to mind, therefore I have hope. The LORD’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The LORD is my portion’ says my soul, ‘therefore I have hope in Him’.” [3:21-24] And even more, because God is the God of restoration, He promises to turn past sorrows and sufferings into joyful celebrations, sombre observations into occasions for cheerful feasts rather than fasts. (Zechariah 8 19)
RESTORING ISRAEL TOGETHER
A happier anniversary is that of the First Zionist Congress that was held on the 9thAugust 1897. Theodor Herzel’s vision of a homeland for the Jews was sounded as a rallying call to an exiled nation, his dream realised on the 14th May 1948.
