Preparing a Place for God
This week’s portion of the Torah, the first five books of the Bible, covers Exodus chapters 25:1-27:19. Whilst on the mountain with God, Moses received instructions to construct a dwelling place for Him. We refer to it as the Tabernacle in the Wilderness. Its Hebrew name is mishkan, a dwelling place or residence. How amazing that God did not ask for a palace, but a tent! Up until now, the God of Israel has performed miracles, signs and wonders on behalf of His people. Now He calls them into partnership with Him to construct something that will demonstrate more of His unfolding plan of redemption. What a privilege to partner with God.
Compared to the account of creation, the instructions, preparation and building of the tabernacle take much more space in our Bible. Among the many lessons we can take from all the details, above all it is a picture of God’s amazing grace!
The Law has been given, and its standards are high, but the Tabernacle provided a place before the Presence of God where each and every person, and the nation as a whole, could bring their sacrifices and offerings for worship, thanksgiving, and with repentance, find forgiveness from God for shortcomings.
