WHAT WOULD WILLIAM COOPER DO TODAY?

On 6 December 1938 William Cooper, who was born in 1861 in Yorta Yorta country near the meeting of the Murray and Goulburn rivers, headed a delegation of Aboriginal colleagues and walked 10 km to the German Consul-General to hand in a letter.

The letter he tried to hand to the Germans was a petition which condemned the “cruel persecution of the Jewish people by the Nazi government of Germany.” His protest resulted from reading about the antisemitic violence of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) on the 9th November which was noted in our newsletter a few weeks ago.

William Cooper

Jews and others have been reenacting William Cooper’s protest for years, holding events on 6 December. That is why, this year, 2024, on 6 December in Melbourne, Christians and others are gathering to hold an event in his honour and to call the silent majority, particularly Christians, to stand up and be counted and call for social cohesion not the hatred of Jews we have seen on our streets and universities This time, it is the turn of Christians to turn out.

“What hurts the victim most is not the cruelty of the oppressor, but the silence of the bystander.” Elie Wiesel, Holocaust Survivor.

We are living in a time where we need to choose if, like William Cooper, we will stand against the oppressor. We hear of attacks on Jews that range from hateful slurs to violence, and Australia is shamefully not immune. In the international arena, rather than stand with a small democratic country fighting terrorist armies on seven fronts, our government it seems has accepted the biased and unconscionable arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the former Israeli Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant. Along with other countries, they are joining an alliance that supports terrorism. ICEJ recognises God’s plans and purposes for Israel and her people and holds dear the God-given mandate at our founding. Isaiah 40:1 “Comfort, comfort My people.”

stand written by his biographer Barbara Miller.

A STREET NAMED TWENTY NINE NOVEMBER

Street named 29 nNovember in Jerusalem

Jeremiah 33:7 declares, “I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before.”

There is a small street in Jerusalem with an unusual name. It is named for a date in 1947 that was a step in bringing about the restoration of Israel as a sovereign state. It was November 29, 1947 when The UN Partition Plan was approved by a margin of 33 votes to 13, with 10 abstentions, this historic vote paved the way for Israel’s independence just six months later.

Save the date and be ready to join together on the 6th of December at 10am, as we honour the enduring legacy of William Cooper. Be inspired by the story of an Indigenous Australian hero who championed the rights of persecuted Jews on the other side of the world.

Venue to be advised.

The Restoration of Israel ICEJ Australia

The Restoration of Israel

Israel today is a remarkable country. Yet the land of Israel was not always so fruitful. God promised that one day He would come and find His people, no matter how far they had been scattered, and return them to the land promised to Abraham and his descendants as an “everlasting possession.”
