“Be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all the day.” Psalm 86:1
Today, 24th April, Israel observes Holocaust and Martyrs Memorial Day. It is an annual solemn day of remembrance that falls a week after the seventh day of Passover, and a week before Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers.
Following the Holocaust many survivors made Australia their new home, far from the horror they had lived through. And there are Holocaust memorial museums that preserve the memories and document the genocide. Visit the one in your State or Territory to refresh your knowledge of the history.
Holocaust Survivors in Israel have been cared for through projects of ICEJ Aid and Homecare as well as an ICEJ volunteer team lovingly serving survivors at the Haifa Home for Holocaust Survivors.
This year, April 30th—Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers—will be especially poignant as the current war means many more young men and women will be mourned. Across Israel, thousands will join grieving families to visit military cemeteries where each grave will bear a small flag, and a soldier will stand guard in silent tribute.
On both memorial days, a siren will sound across the country, bringing everything to a standstill and with bowed heads, Israel will remember
Australia commemorates its own Memorial Day tomorrow. ANZAC Day remembers our soldiers who, on far flung battlefields, proved their courage and earned respect of all.
While both World Wars and other arenas of battle involved ANZAC bravery, a never to be forgotten story comes from the dust and heat of Palestine in October 1917. The mounted New Zealanders took a strategic Turkish position which opened the opportunity for the Australian Light Horse Brigade to take Beersheva and its desperately needed water wells. The epic charge and the courage of the riders and their horses began the liberation of Palestine from the Ottoman Empire. This battle and later ones within the Holy Land, included many Indigenous soldiers even though they weren’t recognised as citizens in their own country.
ANZAC bravery significantly contributed to the restoration of the State of Israel which will be celebrated this year in Israel on the 1st May.

Today, we pause to reflect and remember the men, women and children who were taken from their homes and families, tortured, starved and murdered by the Nazi oppressors. This sombre day of remembrance will again be shadowed by the continued impact of October 7 in which Jews were again subject to horrifying atrocities, murder and captivity.
