INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY
“…for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.”
– Psalm 37:17
In an historic move in 2005, the United Nations declared 27th January International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
This year, commemorations will be held at the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp to mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation. The event will be attended by world leaders. Auschwitz is a symbol of the Holocaust and the atrocities of World War II for most of the world.
When the Red Army discovered and liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau on the 27th January, 1945, most of the prisoners had been forced on a death march to other locations, but about 7,000 starving inmates had been left behind. By then in Auschwitz, the Nazis had murdered approx. 1.1 million people, mostly Jews.
Following the Holocaust the words ‘Never Again’ were declared, but Never Again became Now on October 7, 2023. Once again, Jewish communities were destroyed, Jews murdered for being Jews or taken captive, with unspeakable cruelty inflicted even on babies. Once again, attacks against Jews have been met by silence by those who should have spoken up, whether from apathy or cowed by the Jew haters. As in the 1930’s and during the dark years of the Holocaust, when there were Bystanders or Upstanders, so we have the choice of which we want to be today.
“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.”
– Elie Wiesel
However, despite the shock of October 7, 2023 and all its consequences, Israel remains as a beacon of hope that God’s promises are true. In just over 75 years, Israel has achieved remarkable success in all kinds of fields, leading the world in many areas of modern life. See ‘Light To The Nations for just a glimpse of how Israel has blessed the world.
And be encouraged, God has raised an army to stand with Israel! An army of 24/7 pray-ers. Her true friends have emerged, including millions of Christians, to stand on the side of justice. We praise God for His mercies which are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22) Join us weekly to pray with the Global prayer gathering.
I encourage you to attend public events in your local community or capital city to stand with the Jewish community. If that’s not possible write to your local MP about the despicable rising tide of antisemitism across our nation or write a letter of encouragement to Jewish leaders or local Synagogues.
In light of the prolonged conflict in Israel, and the ensuing surge of antisemitism worldwide, it is vital that Christian pastors and ministry leaders deepen their understanding of Israel’s biblical and prophetic significance in our day. Whether you are a pastor or ministry leader who attends in person, or simply a Christian who wants to join us online, we look forward to welcoming you to Envision 2025, 3-6 February 2025 and being held under the theme “Leading by the Spirit.”
